Melanie Swiftney

Director of Marketing & Communications

What do you do at the GHACF?

I handle the writing, graphic design, and social media needs for the foundation. Odds are, if you heard about us online or in the media, it came from my desk.

How long have you been with the GHACF?

I have been with the GHACF since August 2015.

Why do you work at the GHACF?

I lived in Grand Haven at different points throughout my life and have always considered this my hometown, so it’s a dream come true to be able to work for an organization whose mission is to improve this community. The short commute, the view, and being steps from the Grand Armory and Toasted Pickle don’t hurt either.

Education & Experience

I graduated magna cum laude from James Madison University in Virginia, where I earned a BA in Mass Communications (with a concentration in visual communications) and a minor in Spanish. Over my 20-year career, I’ve worked at two advertising agencies and been a part of four internal communications teams — most recently at Bissell in Grand Rapids. I’ve lived in Chicago, Mexico, and the East Coast and am happy to be back in my hometown in Michigan.

Do you have a leisure activity or hobby?

I play every sport imaginable with my husband Jeremy. In the winter we’ve played soccer, dodgeball, bowling, and skied. The rest of the year is devoted to softball, golf, hiking, biking, kayaking, volleyball, walking the dog, and the occasional game of cornhole. Needless to say, we don’t sit still for long.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I’ve published six young adult novels under my maiden name, Melanie Hooyenga. Writing’s been my passion for many years so when I AM sitting still, you can find me pecking away at my computer. I love having that creative outlet, and being able to share my stories with the world makes it all worthwhile.
